Commonly prescribed drugs and a hospital killing and harming the elderly

(NaturalNews) Prescription drugs and drug combinations and drug takes its toll on older people, leading to a risk of hospitalization, mental deterioration and death. And some drugs are worse than others.

A study published in November in the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that anticoagulants and diabetes medications cause most emergency visits to hospital for adverse drug reactions in people over 65 years in the U.S. States. According to the study, only four drugs, used alone or in combination, are responsible for two thirds of hospital emergencies in the elderly.

Topping the list is wayfarin blood thinner, also known as Coumadin, which accounted for 33 percent of visits to the emergency room. Insulin shots ranked second on the list, representing 14 percent of visits. Aspirin, clopidogrel and other antiplatelet drugs are prescribed to prevent blood clots by 13 percent and the third just behind them are oral medications for diabetes are responsible for 11 percent of visits.

Last July, another study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that more than half of dozens of parents regularly prescribed analgesics, antihistamines and psychiatric drugs known as anticholinergics, which causes mental deterioration and death. The researchers found that those who take more than two dozen lower anticholinergic drugs on tests of cognitive function than those not taking the medication, and mortality rates for large consumers in the study were 68 percent higher.
